What do you do?

I primarily review personal tax returns before they are sent to clients and manage certain relationships. I also deal with ad-hoc personal tax advisory queries.

Why do you do it?

I somehow got a job working at HMRC doing personal tax enquiries as a graduate with very little actual work experience when the job market was very difficult. At first I was just grateful to have a steady job but found that I actually enjoyed understanding how tax works. After some years there I realised there wasn’t really much opportunity to progress, so I left to do personal tax compliance at Grant Thornton and progressed from there.

What kind of projects have you been involved in?

Mostly to make the tax return process go as smoothly as possible, running reports to highlight information we can obtain directly rather than wait for clients to provide it. I have also previously been involved with some initial planning for Making Tax Digital.

What’s on top of your bucket list?

To visit every continent, except possibly Antarctica. I think that travel broadens the mind and want to experience different cultures.
