What do you do?

I work closely with clients to help them understand the tax relief legislation and how this applies to their day-to-day activities. I love it when clients realise, for example that the R&D regime is far-reaching and their activities don’t have to be ground-breaking to qualify. 

Why do you do it?

Having worked in an accountancy practice since 2004, I have assisted clients with accounts preparation, tax compliance, tax advisory and I have always enjoyed having a good rapport with clients. For me, it is not just about how profitable a company is, I have a genuine interest in what the companies are doing. I thoroughly enjoy hearing about new projects and exploring how the company is looking to explore new markets and keep their business at the forefront of their industry. 

What kind of projects have you been involved in?

I have considerable experience dealing with a wide range of industries and have a keen interest in the more obscure claims. For example, who would have thought a window and door manufacturer would qualify for tax relief. Windows and doors have been around for years and are fairly standard, right? Wrong! There is so much innovation behind the manufacture of windows and doors. This may be researching and developing new locking systems to enhance security, utilisation of new materials to be more environmentally friendly and many other developments which the company may think are part of their general day-to-day business.

A window and door manufacturer could claim tax relief in the region of £50,000 per annum for their continued development and this is simply as a result of doing what they consider to be their day job!

Any saving will be dependent on the size of the workforce and the level of development works being performed but I am sure you will agree, a tax saving of that value is certainly worth exploring.

What’s on top of your bucket list?

The top of my bucket list is to take my children to swim with dolphins. I have done this a couple of times pre-children and I love it so much that I want to go back and do it again with the kids 😊
