What do you do?

My role is to help clients maximise tax savings on capital expenditure incurred in their businesses. For example if my client was buying an office, I would identify where they can make savings, through Capital Allowances, on the acquisition and on any subsequent refurbishment or fit out construction works. I will also identify ways to accelerate these savings and provide advice on how to protect or market this relief during a transaction.

Why do you do it?

Capital Allowances (CA) was not something I had heard about; it was while looking for jobs after University I came across it. Having now developed so much experience in all aspects of CA its safe to say I am now hooked on helping my clients, whether large FTSE 100 companies or smaller family businesses and high net worth individuals, make big savings.

The interaction between tax and surveying makes it particularly interesting and unique in the accountancy and tax world! As cliché as it sounds, each project has its own nuances and challenges which makes it exciting. And it keeps me on my toes in a constantly changing legislative landscape.

What kind of projects have you been involved in?

The world of Capital Allowances has allowed me to travel the breadth and depth of the UK and Ireland, undertaking site surveys in the Scottish Isles to most major cities as well as the tranquil towns in Cornwall! I have helped clients save millions of pounds on Grade A office fit outs in central London as well as on trophy commercial property acquisitions. Furthermore, I have worked on many asset classes ranging from large sheds to hospitality and leisure facilities and complex data centres.

What’s on top of your bucket list?

To combine my two passions, travel and tennis, by going to all 4 grand slam tournaments across the globe. Although I believe I could have made it to the top, I will at the very least be able to live my failed tennis career through watching the actual pros!
