What do you do?
I’m a Senior Manager in Private Client Tax, overseeing both the International Tax and the Sports and Media team. My overall goal is to help individuals and families to organise and protect their wealth through effective tax planning.
Why do you do it?
I really enjoy getting to know people, learning about their passions, work and family. Listening to what their intentions are – whether that’s growing a business, buying a sportscar or a new home, saving for children’s school fees or seeking adventures.
I like to assist individuals with creating a plan to help achieve their goals and then continue to develop that plan as life and careers progress, and those goals change. It’s important to consider the whole lifecycle of finances and tax, from just starting out, earning money, having sufficient funds for retirement and planning for inheritance tax.
Everyone has a different outlook to life and to what they would like to achieve financially, which really interests me.
What kind of projects have you been involved in?
I’ve advised clients who have worked overseas for varying periods of time, or who have come to the UK to live and work, helping them to navigate the residency and double tax rules that will be applied to their income, and to determine the taxing rules when they sell assets whilst they are internationally mobile.
Inheritance tax planning is a key part of this for internationally mobile clients, ensuring that you are prepared for which country will charge you inheritance tax, based on your historic movements, not just where you live at the time of death.
I’ve also helped business owners to think about and plan their exit strategy in terms of passing shares and business assets to future generations, helping to secure tax reliefs for inheritance tax and capital gains tax.
What’s on top of your bucket list?
Top of my bucket list is to ride the Race Across America (RAAM), a 3,000 mile cycle race across 12 states, starting in California. It has a finishing time limit of just 12 days.
Why? I’m a competitive Ironman triathlete competing for GBR in age group racing, I have cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats, and am racing the Pan Celtic (1250 miles cycled in 10 days unsupported), so I’m always on the hunt for a bigger, better, slightly more impossible sporting challenge and RAAM ticks all of those boxes!
