What do you do?
I’m a Personal Tax Manager. I look after a portfolio of clients and prepare their income tax returns. I also provide tax advice on a range of personal tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax/trusts issues.
Why do you do it?
A mix of things really. I started out doing a law degree and was in the midst of studying part time for my Post Grad Diploma in Legal Practice when I got a job as a tax assistant at EY. I loved the tax private client element of my course and this linked in nicely with my job at EY. I therefore made a decision to pursue a career in private client tax, as opposed to law.
What kind of projects have you been involved in?
Succession planning for inheritance tax where a review of wills and some tweaks can save clients unnecessary tax. Capital gains tax calculations for residential property disposals and utilising all available residence and lettings reliefs. Calculating the amount of distributions that can be made from discretionary trusts to ensure that the trust doesn’t have additional income tax charges and so that the beneficiaries receive tax credits from HMRC. Preparation and submission of inheritance tax forms for trusts so that penalties for the trust are not incurred. And remuneration planning for clients so that income is structured in a way to use their available dividend, savings and personal allowances.
What’s on top of your bucket list?
The London Marathon – It’s on top as I got a ballot place this year so it’s happening in three weeks time. Once that’s ticked off, I would love to do the New York marathon.
