What do you do?

I help academies and charities meet their obligations to be accountable. Along the way, I try to help them improve the way their finance functions so it is more effective for what they need.

According to various people along the way this includes producing the official records of what has happened in a year and translating from accountant into human.

Why do you do it?

I was lucky to start at a firm that had a lot of not for profit clients. Ever since then I have always predominantly worked with the sector as there is just so much variety in the types of activities and people from nurseries and schools to care homes via historic art works and international relief work.

What kind of projects have you been involved in?

Everything from the relatively mundane such as helping implement new accounting software to talking a charity through using reserves on a transformational project and dealing with the VAT and customs implications of importing a large pipe organ…

What’s on top of your bucket list?

A chance to properly travel around the north of Scotland and the islands. I’ve been a few times and have only just scratched the surface.
