What do you do?
I’m an Innovation Consultant – most of what I do is working with firms who are making advances in the fields of science or technology to claim tax relief. I get to explore innovative and unique projects from all different kinds of sectors and understand the technical challenges behind these projects. I also work with firms who use patents and can assist in applying for grants to kickstart R&D projects.
Why do you do it?
I almost ‘fell into’ Innovation after finishing sixth form. I have a passion for technology and engineering, but mainly energy and in particular Nuclear energy solutions. Growing up in Teesside exposed me to traditional industries and heavy manufacturing firms such as steel makers, which in turn made me realize just how important innovation and growth is for these firms and the benefit to the economy. I wanted to be part of the technological advances of the future – so Innovation seemed the perfect fit for me.
What kind of projects have you been involved in?
My portfolio includes clients from all industries covered by R&D, but the most exciting ones are the more niche ones. Right now, I am working with a company who design and build world class stages for events, such as the Tokyo Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee. Being able to recover some of the big costs involved in their R&D process through tax relief is very satisfying – it’s nice to feel like you’ve helped somehow.
What’s on top of your bucket list?
The top thing on my bucket list is to visit the Jozef Stefan Institute in Slovenia to view the TRIGA research reactors – some of the best in Europe. The future of these reactors such as potential for neutron beam tube experiments is super exciting.
